The Journey to a Photography Education

It would have been nice, had I recognized my interest in photography when I was a lot younger. Who knows what might have been different. One difference, however, might have been how I went about learning both the craft and its art.I can only imagine what it would have been like to study photography at any one of the many great schools with a photography curriculum. We read about many of them or see their advertisements in popular photo magazines. I’ve always found the ads for schools like the Rocky Mountain School of Photography or the New York Institute of Photography inviting but have never found the time (or the money) to take advantage of them.I’ve had the pleasure of working with photographers who studied photography at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) for example, and I’ve always been impressed by their knowledge.However, I’ve taken a different route and it’s one I think is quite common. I was first attracted to photography more than 30 years into my career as a custom publisher. While I’d been around photography all my working life, even taking a few photos myself over the years, it wasn’t until I received a subscription to Outdoor Photographer magazine that I caught the bug for nature photography.By this time I had a career, a business, and a family so the photography education had to be acquired in a less formal manner. I opted for workshops, The Nikon School, a George Lepp workshop at Union College in Schenectady NY, and others along the way… most recently The Barefoot Contessa’s Photo Adventures’ Fall Workshop in New Hampshire re-ignited my interest and I hope my creativity.Perhaps another opportunity, available to just about everyone, has provided the bulk of my education though – books. Every good bookstore has a large variety of books on photography. I gravitated to those by noted nature photographers and I have a small and growing library of books on nature photography now. I’ve read many repeatedly. Some, like George Lepp’s Beyond the Basics (1 &2) or Michael Busselle’s Better Picture Guide to Landscape Photography, introduced me to the basics such controlling exposure and the importance of depth of field. Others, such as the Center for Nature Photography Series by Allen Rokach and Anne Millman, delved into subjects like zone exposure, the different perspectives provided by lenses of different focal lengths or the use of fill flash, and of course composition.As my “education” progressed I found myself gravitating toward books with more focus (pun intended) on the art of photography than its craft. I discovered that I really enjoyed books by Freeman Patterson, Tony Sweet, and David Ward to mention a few. Each expanded my horizons and whet my appetite for more.

Education in Pakistan – Need to Be Globalized

The term Commercial Education includes practical training in the field of commerce. It covers professional courses like accounting, banking, book-keeping, business methods, costing, marketing, income-tax, sales tax practices, higher statistics etc. Here is a quotation by Nelson Mandela about the power of education “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

Pakistan is a developing country. Importance of commercial education in Pakistan cannot be overlooked. We are living in an age of commercial and technical revolution, and for the real progress of commerce and industry, we need efficient and trained hands. Therefore, commercial education is of imperative necessity in our country. It becomes all the more important in view of the fact that although we have already entered the field of commerce and industry, we do not have sufficient number of trained persons. Modern business is highly complication one. It is elaborate machinery with wheels and counter wheels nicely adjusted and regulated to well-planned ends. The commercial education acquaints our young men both with the theoretical as well as practical aspects of all matters relating to it. The study of theories and practices of commerce, trade and industry enables a business man to see things in their true colour. It equips him with the knowledge of the tendencies which are at work in the business market. A reputed English writer, somewhere told that “Prejudices, it is well-known, are most difficult to eradicate from the heart whose soil has never been loosened or fertilised by education: they grow there, firm as weeds among stones.”

Now the importance of education is realized everywhere in Pakistan. The Government has introduced education at the college and university level. Commercial institutes have started at almost all the important cities of Pakistan. But one feels that still commercial education has not received its due. So, more opportunities for higher education will have to create in the field of commerce than they are available at present. It is wrong to presume that the students of commercial education have no plans. There is boundless scope for expansion of industry and commerce in our country. The scope for a hard-working intelligent young man in the field of commerce is great. There are as many branches as there are temperaments to suit. For many years to come there will be available jobs for person having commercial education in commercial firms, banks and industrial organizations. Let us hope that the Government will give more and more attention to this need of the nation. The study of B.B.A. (Bachelor of Business Administration) is quite relevant with present situation and there are lots of advance branches of studies. Additional facilities will be provided at the college and university level. So, now a day Commercial education is as necessary as well as Technical education or any other field of education.
